Most likely, you can hold your studentsâ attention in one activity for approximately 30 minutes and probably less with younger and less mature learners. Todayâs students are conditioned to a limited amount of concentration, a heightened sense of immediacy, and a reduced level of self-sufficiency due partially to their habits with television and movies, computer games and the Internet, e-mail, and cell phones. You are a part of this generation too, only now you are the teacher, and you can channel these habits into effective social studies teaching and learning.
In a traditional class period, your class can be subdivided into three main time segments to facilitate effective teaching and learning opportunities: (1) opening the learning; (2) leading students through the body of the lesson, such as facilitating in-class activities or guiding projects; and (3) closing the learning. You will select different types of strategies to fit each of the time segments. In this chapter we describe ten strategies to exemplify each time segment. You may discover that some of the examples listed in one time segment can be modified and used in a different way. We strongly encourage you to find more strategies and add them to your repertoire as your social studies teaching career develops.
Class activities are much better than sitting in a desk reading a book. I enjoy playing games and making posters. These activities help you better understand the material.
